Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of productive zakat management implemented by the Zakat Collection Unit (UPZ) of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University (Untirta) in supporting educational scholarship programs for underprivileged students. The research focuses on the aspects of governance, accountability, and social impact of two main programs, namely the UKT-Based Scholarship and the Mosque Catalyst Scholarship, as instruments for human resource development and social empowerment in higher education.

Design/Methodology/Approach

This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, direct observation, and document analysis. Informants consist of UPZ administrators, beneficiaries, and other related parties.

Findings

The results of the study show that productive zakat management at UPZ Untirta is effective in improving access to education and reducing the risk of dropping out for underprivileged students. The Mosque Catalyst Scholarship Program is considered the most successful because it not only provides financial assistance but also shapes students' religious and social character through monthly reporting requirements and involvement in campus mosque activities. In contrast, the UKT-Based Scholarship, although having an economic impact, is still lacking in terms of guidance and follow-up evaluation of its recipients. The main challenges faced include limited zakat funds, suboptimal digital infrastructure, and the absence of a long- term impact evaluation system. In general, UPZ management has reflected the principles of good governance, accountability, and alignment with the objectives of maqashid syariah.

Research limitations/implications

This study is limited to one institutional context, namely UPZ Untirta, and focuses on qualitative data. Further research is recommended to use quantitative or mixed methods to assess economic and social impacts more comprehensively, as well as to compare the effectiveness of UPZs at various universities.

Practical implications

The results of this study provide practical recommendations for zakat institutions and policymakers in designing education-based productive zakat programs that are integrated with a coaching system, digital reporting, and continuous monitoring to improve the transparency and sustainability of the program.

Social implications

This study confirms the strategic role of campus zakat institutions in promoting social inclusion, reducing educational disparities, and fostering the spiritual and intellectual potential of students. These results support the contribution of zakat to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) point 4 (Quality Education) and point 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

Originality/value

This study provides an original contribution to the study of productive campus-based zakat management by combining governance analysis, educational effectiveness, and social empowerment. UPZ Untirta is highlighted as a representative model of the application of Islamic philanthropy in higher education that is capable of supporting sustainable human development based on sharia values.
